Flatwork & Slabs That Stay Strong
Poured concrete is the foundation of almost every outdoor and structural project around your home — your driveway, patio, garage slab, sidewalks, steps, and the footings and foundations everything else sits on. When it's done right, it lasts for decades. When it's rushed, it cracks and settles.
At Walchak Concrete we've spent 20 years pouring flatwork and slabs across Winona and the surrounding area. We take the time to grade and compact the base, set proper forms, place the right reinforcement, and finish at the correct moment — the details that decide whether concrete holds up to our Minnesota freeze-thaw winters.
We handle residential and light commercial work: new driveways and approaches, backyard patios, garage and shed slabs, sidewalks and walkways, poured steps, and footings and foundations. You get a level, durable surface that looks clean and adds real value to your property.

How We Pour Concrete That Lasts
No shortcuts on the parts you can't see. Here's exactly how we take a project from first call to a finished, cured slab.
-
Free On-Site Evaluation
We measure the area, check the existing grade and drainage, talk through your plans, and give you a clear, itemized quote — on the spot, no obligation.
-
Site Prep & Grading
We remove old concrete or sod, excavate to depth, then grade and compact a solid gravel base. This step is what keeps a slab from settling or cracking later.
-
Forming & Reinforcement
We set and level the forms to the right elevation and slope, then place rebar or wire mesh so the finished concrete carries weight and resists cracking.
-
Pour & Finish
We place the concrete, screed it level, then float and finish to your chosen texture — broom, smooth, or edged — and cut control joints so it cracks where we want it to, not where you don't.
-
Curing & Sealing
We protect the fresh pour while it cures and walk you through care. Light foot traffic comes back in a day or two and vehicles after about a week. Ask us about sealing to protect it for the long haul.

What Our Customers Say
Real homeowners around Winona. Real projects. Real results.
"We had a backyard patio and a set of steps poured. The prep work was thorough and you can tell they don't cut corners on the base. Fair price and great communication the whole way through."
"Poured a new garage slab for my detached shop. Showed up when they said, finished it smooth and level, and cleaned up after themselves. Exactly the kind of local contractor you hope to find."
Poured Concrete FAQ
How long does new concrete take to cure?
You can usually walk on it within a day or two, but it keeps gaining strength for weeks. We recommend keeping vehicles off a new driveway or slab for about 7 days, and we'll give you specific guidance for your project before we leave.
Why does concrete crack, and can you prevent it?
All concrete moves a little as it cures and as the ground freezes and thaws. We control where it cracks by compacting a solid base, adding reinforcement, and cutting control joints in the right spots so any cracking happens neatly along those lines instead of randomly across the surface.
What finishes can I choose for my concrete?
The most common is a broom finish, which adds grip and is great for driveways, sidewalks, and patios. We can also do a smooth trowel finish or clean edged borders. If you want a decorative look, ask about our stamped concrete and overlays.
Do I need to seal my new concrete?
It's not required, but sealing helps protect against moisture, road salt, and freeze-thaw damage, and keeps the surface looking fresh longer. We're happy to seal your concrete or recommend a maintenance schedule.
Do you handle commercial concrete work?
Yes — we do residential and light commercial flatwork like approaches, pads, walkways, and small slabs. Reach out with the details and we'll let you know if it's a good fit.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in Winona, MN and work within about a 60-mile radius, including La Crosse WI, Rochester MN, Wabasha MN, Lake City MN, St. Charles MN, Red Wing MN, Eau Claire WI, and Westby WI.
